24 August 2021 Ministers Luigi Di Maio and Lorenzo Guerini took stock of the situation in the hearing of the joint Foreign Affairs and Defense Committees of the Chamber and Senate.

"Al Qaeda, although weakened, is still alive and can count on the ambiguity of the relationship with the Taliban and on their inability to effectively control the entire Afghan territory. Daesh, on the contrary, has always maintained antagonistic positions". This was said by Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio and confirmed that "Afghanistan will be at the center of my meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov on Friday".

To cope with the increase in migrations from Afghanistan "there cannot be only national solutions. It is therefore necessary that the European Union, beyond the management of the emergency, develop a common response, in close collaboration with the partners of the region".

Guerini, the numbers of the evacuation

"So far 3,741 Afghans have been evacuated, of which 2,659 in Italy through 44 flights. What has happened in recent days cannot question the work of our soldiers. I think that the first to be affected by what is happening are our soldiers. The rapid advance of the Taliban met with almost no resistance from the local security forces who fled and, in some cases, left behind weapons and vehicles ". This was stated by the Minister of Defense, Lorenzo Guerini, always during the hearing. According to the minister, "in the background of these obvious military failures there is also the lack of cohesion and credible leadership of the Afghan authorities".

"The issue - underlined Di Maio - will have to be addressed by making use of all available instruments, ordinary and extraordinary, to discourage and prevent unsafe and illegal migratory routes". "To this end, it is important to ensure the operation of international organizations on the ground and to support the countries of the region at the European level in dealing with the welcome I tell them they will leave Afghanistan", said the minister. "There is an entire generation of Afghan children who grew up without the Taliban regime", Di Maio said, announcing the intention to "increase the offer of scholarships destined for them to protect their right to 'instruction". "We intend to facilitate synergies between universities, administrations and civil society, systematizing the numerous offers of solidarity that are coming to us these days ", said the minister.
