See the development and hear from the municipality about the cost of the bikes.

In 2019, lending of rental bicycles had almost halved compared to 2015. One of the explanations for the decline in 2019 was the introduction of electric scooters in Gothenburg.

Electric scooters arrived in the city in November 2018.

Criticism of bad brakes

But the reduced popularity of borrowed bicycles is, according to the city of Gothenburg, not only due to electric scooters.

There have also been complaints about wear and tear and lack of maintenance of the bikes, for example too bad brakes.

In 2020, the system for loan bicycles was redesigned.

At that time, bicycles were also exhibited in Mölndal.

The hope was that the new, more modern system would make it easier for users to pay for and pick up bicycles.

At the same time, the price was raised significantly - the costs for an annual card rose from 75 to 300 kronor.

The new system was not in place until June 2020, which makes the figures for 2020 difficult to compare with.

This year, up to and including 8 August, there had been just over 194,000 lending of the rental bicycles.

Hoping for bigger revenue

With the new system, financing via advertising revenues also disappeared.

The new system costs the municipalities a total of SEK 12.6 million per year.

Before the system was introduced, the city of Gothenburg hoped that the increased price of annual passes would increase revenues.

- We will increase the cost for users a little.

Only that means that we get revenue that covers 50 percent of the costs, said Sara Boije af Gennäs, project manager at the traffic office in the city of Gothenburg to SVT Nyheter Väst in December 2018.

Far from the goal

But the goal of selling 22,000 annual cards is far away.

So far this year, almost 1,900 annual cards have been sold.

And the revenue covers far from 50 percent of the costs.

Up to and including July, revenues were just over SEK 620,000.
