Tunisian President Kais Saied announced the extension of the exceptional measures to suspend the work of Parliament, and to lift the immunity of its members until further notice.

A statement issued by the presidency stated that President Saeed issued a presidential order to extend the exceptional measures taken pursuant to Presidential Order No. 80 of 2021 related to suspending the competencies of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People and lifting the parliamentary immunity of all its members, until further notice.

The statement added that Saeed will address the Tunisian people in the coming days with a statement.

Tunisia has been witnessing a severe political crisis since President Said decided last July 25 to dismiss Prime Minister Hisham Al-Mashishi, freeze the powers of Parliament for a period of 30 days (ending Wednesday), lift the immunity of deputies, preside over the Public Prosecution, and later issued orders to dismiss officials and appoint others.

But the majority of parties - including "Ennahda" - rejected these decisions, and some considered them a "coup against the constitution", while other parties supported them, seeing them as a "correction of the path" in light of the political, economic and health crises (the Corona pandemic).
