The Crimean Platform is an international summit which will bring together representatives of around 45 countries this Monday in Kiev.

For the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the objective is as follows: to create a consultative body between all the states which condemn the annexation of Crimea by Russia and to lead to a joint declaration which could constitute the future legal basis of a return of Crimea to Ukrainian fold, in accordance with international law.

According to the organizers, this is the first international initiative to counter territorial annexation since World War II.

Beyond the question of sovereignty over Crimea, discussions should also focus on the repression targeting the Crimean Tatar population, but also on the blockade of the Sea of Azov, and even of the Black Sea, created by facto by the Russian Federation.

The Kremlin is also strongly irritated by this initiative, to the point that it has put pressure on many states not to participate in the Crimean Platform.

Thus Azerbaijan, generally on good terms with Ukraine, has just defected at the last minute.
