Because of the large number of illegally entering migrants via Belarus, Poland is erecting a 2.50 meter high fence on the border with its eastern neighbor.

Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak wrote on Twitter on Monday that more soldiers should also strengthen the border guard.

900 soldiers are currently deployed on the 418-kilometer border with Belarus.

The Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko announced at the end of May that Minsk would no longer prevent migrants from continuing to travel to the EU - in response to tightened Western sanctions.

Since then, Lithuania in particular has had to deal with an influx of migrants from the Middle East across the border with Belarus, and the pressure on Poland has recently increased.

On Monday, Lukashenko accused the Poles of instigating a conflict at the border and violating Belarus' state border.

"The Poles captured 50 people on Polish territory who (...) wanted to go to Germany where Mother Merkel had called them," he said, according to the Belarusian news agency Belta.

The Poles then drove this group to the Belarusian side of the border under threat of armed violence.

According to the Polish border guards, a group of 24 refugees has been waiting for days near the village of Usnarz Gorny in the border area with Belarus. According to the Polish news agency PAP, they are said to be Afghans. Polish border guards surrounded the refugees and blocked access with vehicles, and armed security forces could be seen on the Belarusian side.
