Hurricane Henri was downgraded this Sunday to a tropical storm, the American Hurricane Monitoring Center (NHC) announced, as the low approaches the northeastern United States.

With winds of up to 110 km / h, Henri must touch the American coasts of New England or Long Island, near New York, in the late morning or early afternoon Sunday, according to a bulletin from NHC.

"A relative weakening is possible this morning, but it is still expected that Henry will be a strong tropical storm when it reaches the coasts of southern New England and Long Island," said the bulletin, before specifying that a "Rapid weakening" was expected after making landfall.

Up to 25 centimeters of precipitation

"A dangerous rise in coastal waters, strong gusts of wind, and precipitation that could cause flooding are expected in parts of the northeastern United States," the NHC warned.

The National Meteorological Service announced on Saturday evening that it expected Henri to remain in a Category 1 hurricane when he arrived on the coast.

Part of the northeastern United States, including New York, was placed on alert Friday for the approaching storm, which had a chance of becoming the first hurricane in 30 years to hit the New England coast. .
