21 August 2021 Scientists have little doubt and a lot of concern about the rain recorded last August 14 on the always snow-capped summit of Greenland, right at the coldest point of the ice sheet more than 500 miles above the Arctic Circle.
For the first time it rained for several hours and temperatures rose slightly above freezing and this would be the obvious and worrying sign of climate change.
The researchers are amazed by what happened considering that the research station (in the photo, known as Summit Camp - 3,216 meters above sea level), managed by the National Science Foundation, had never recorded rain since the beginning of the observations. So since the Eighties.
Temperatures above freezing are also rare, occurring only six times in the last 2000 years, while in 2012, 2019 and the current year they occurred three times in less than 10 years.
