• Delphine Batho, Jean-Marc Governatori, Yannick Jadot, Eric Piolle and Sandrine Rousseau hope to represent ecology in the 2022 presidential election.

  • The five candidates face each other in a two-round primary, held in September.

  • The main issue will be the number of participants, while anyone over the age of 16 can participate in the vote.

The ecologists give the race start at the Elysée.

Five candidates are in the running for the primary of environmentalists, which will take place at the start of the school year and must designate the champion of the Greens for the 2022 presidential election. Since Thursday and until Saturday, Delphine Batho, Jean-Marc Governatori, Yannick Jadot, Eric Piolle and Sandrine Rousseau meet their activists to present their program, during the summer days of environmentalists in Poitiers.

The opportunity to come back to the modalities of the ballot.

Who are the candidates?

They are officially five on the starting line.

MEP Yannick Jadot, who led the EELV list to the Europeans in 2019 (third at 13.48%), is the favorite in the ballot, with the mayor of Grenoble Eric Piolle, who highlights his "experience of victory" .

The economist Sandrine Rousseau is an outsider, wishing to embody a feminist environmentalist.

Two other personalities could play the spoilsport: the former minister of François Hollande, Delphine Batho, who advocates degrowth and the centrist entrepreneur Jean-Marc Governatori.

When does the vote take place?

The first round of this primary organized by five environmental training courses (EELV, Générations, Mouvement des progressistes, Génération écologie and the Independent Ecologist Alliance) will take place from September 16 to 19 on the internet.

Voters will then decide between the finalists from September 25 to 28.

Who can vote?

The ballot is open to anyone aged 16 or over.

To vote, you must be a member of one of the organizing parties or pay a contribution of two euros.

Then, it is enough to register on the dedicated site before September 12 at midnight, and to sign a charter of ecological values, which defends certain principles such as "the recognition of the state of climatic emergency", "the restoration of cause of economic liberalism and predatory logic ”,“ feminism as an emancipatory value ”, the“ right of peoples to self-determination ”or“ the construction of a federal and social Europe and of democratic world governance ".

Will there be debates?

Yes, the first will take place on France Inter and on France Info on September 5th.

LCI will also broadcast two debates, on September 8 with all nomination contestants, and on September 22 between the two finalists.

Presented by Ruth Elkrief, they will be organized in partnership with the daily

Le Figaro

and with the participation of the online media Loopsider.

What stakes?

Who will wear the green colors in the presidential election?

If Yannick Jadot is the favorite, the results of the previous primaries were surprising.

Green activists have often eliminated the most media personalities, such as Cécile Duflot, in the first round in 2016, or Nicolas Hulot in 2011. In 2016, Yannick Jadot was indeed appointed, but he finally sided with the candidacy of the socialist Benoît Hamon.

This year, participation will be particularly scrutinized.
