More than 5,000 wooden merchant ships entered Dubai ports during the first half

The Office of the Navigational Agent for Wooden Ships, affiliated with the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation in Dubai, announced that it supervised the organization of the entry of more than 5,000 wooden ships into Dubai ports during the first half of 2021, thus contributing to the development of the emirate's trade by wooden ships.

These ships carried 260,001 tons of cargo, and 365,632 tons were exported from the emirate to the world, in accordance with the specific procedures in the field of security and safety, and in coordination with the concerned government agencies in this sector.

This comes within the framework of Dubai's leading global position as a major global and regional center for international trade, and in line with the great role of the movement of goods exchange using wooden ships and its contribution to achieving diversity in Dubai's foreign trade. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation in Dubai, said: The office assumes the task of supervising wooden ships, and organizing all operations related to them during their stay in the waters of the Emirate of Dubai to carry out procedures and services on behalf of ship owners and operators, as well as looking after the interests of those ships, ensuring the safety and protection of seafarers working on them, and ensuring their rights during the period their presence in the emirate.

He added, "Despite the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the office has succeeded since the beginning of this year in organizing the entry and exit of more than 5,383 wooden ships through Hamriya Port, Deira Harbor and Dubai Creek, carrying 260,001 tons of goods and consumables coming in with the aim of Trade and feeding traditional markets, in addition to exporting 365,632 tons from Dubai to various destinations around the world,” indicating that the total number of merchants who applied for direct transactions and services with the shipping agent’s office for wooden ships reached 650, where Deira Port received 288 merchants. Dubai Creek has 240 merchants, Mina Al Hamriya has 115 merchants, and Mina Rashid has 7 merchants.

The Chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation in Dubai confirmed that the Office of the Navigational Agent for Wooden Ships seeks to regulate the operations of wooden ships in all matters related to maritime safety, as part of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation's continuous endeavor to develop the trade and business environment in the emirate.

Develop the movement of trade in wooden ships.

In line with the escalating efforts to develop the movement of trade in wooden ships through Dubai ports, and the Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation’s endeavor to enhance and consolidate aspects of maritime security and safety for ships, as well as developing the trade and business environment in the emirate, the Office of the Navigational Agent for Wooden Ships, affiliated with the Ports, Customs and Region Corporation, is keen The Free Zone in Dubai, in this context, facilitated many services for these wooden ships, including handling goods, ensuring their safety and protecting them from damage during unloading and loading operations and during their stay on the berths of the port, in addition to many other facilities and services, through the application of smart technologies in transactions, such as The "electronic reservation" system, through which the dates of entry of wooden ships into the Emirate of Dubai and their landing sites are determined, which reduces the waiting period, organizes the berths and increases their capacity, as well as through the use of the "Now" applicationSpecialized in linking owners of wooden ships with merchants in the country electronically, where ship owners determine through the system the type of goods to be transported, the available space, capacity and prices, while the system provides traders in the country with information about the ships that will go to Dubai and are available to transport goods to the target destinations.

In this context, Ibn Sulayem said: “The office of the shipping agent for wooden ships has contributed, since its launch in July 2020 until now, in developing the business of wooden ship owners by shortening the time and transactions necessary to clear their goods and unifying the party they need to deal with, in addition to offering commercial options. These include providing opportunities for long-term contracts for their services, as well as preserving goods, ensuring their safety and protecting them from damage during unloading and loading operations during their stay at the docks in Dubai Ports.”
