It cannot be predicted with any certainty whether many Afghans will flee their country in the near future.

There is no question that historical experience speaks in favor of it;

especially people whose livelihoods and lifestyles depended on the presence of the West have good reasons to leave.

However, many of them will already be flown out through the western airlifts, provided that they can continue to operate.

Many other Afghans may first wait to see whether it remains peaceful and how the Taliban behave.

It is pure speculation that between 300,000 and five million will set off, as they say in Berlin.

But there is no doubt that it would be good if the EU were prepared for all eventualities.

In 2015 it wasn't, the result is well known.

The interior ministers of the member states held a special meeting on Wednesday - to talk about Belarus.

You can only shake your head. It is of course an important issue for the EU that Lukashenko uses migrants as leverage against Lithuania. But the dimension of the potential problem in Afghanistan is much larger. If the EU really wants those seeking protection to stay in the countries of the region, it must now agree as quickly as possible on how this could be achieved. Once again, one shouldn't miss out on an important development in Afghanistan.
