The CDU in the Ahrweiler district considers the district administrator of Ahrweiler, Jürgen Pföhler (CDU), to be no longer acceptable.

That emerges from a statement by the CDU district association Ahrweiler on Monday.

The reason given was that Pföhler could “no longer exercise his office foreseeable due to illness”.

Therefore, the step is "necessary and inevitable".

It also said: “The trust of the people in the Ahrweiler district is no longer given.

The decisive and tough leadership of the office, which is now imperative, is no longer possible in such an exceptional situation. "

"Unencumbered new beginning"

The circle now needs "an unencumbered new beginning" in order to master the challenges of the coming years.

The prerequisite for this is "the population's trust in those responsible for politics".

After the flood disaster, Pföhler was heavily criticized.

On July 14th and 15th, extreme heavy rain triggered a tidal wave on the Ahr and flooded large parts of the valley.

Around 42,000 people are affected by the consequences.

Many people were killed and more are still missing.

The Koblenz public prosecutor's office started investigations against Pföhler and another member of the crisis team at the beginning of August.

It is about the initial suspicion of negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm through negligence.

In essence, it should be clarified whether human lives could have been saved with previous warnings or evacuations.

Editor's note: In an earlier version of this report it was said that the district administrator of the Ahrweiler district, Jürgen Pföhler, had resigned from his office.

This is not the case.

We have changed the message accordingly.
