Firefighters made a dramatic discovery on Sunday afternoon in a pavilion in Nogent-sur-Marne in Val-de-Marne.

Responding to the start of a fire, rescuers found the bodies of a couple and a 3-year-old child inside the accommodation, we learned from corroborating sources.

The fire "of low intensity" was extinguished when the firefighters arrived, explained Captain Philippe Schupp, from the Paris fire brigade communication office.

The firefighters carried out clearing operations.

Was fire accidental or criminal?

An investigation for "search for the causes of death" has been opened, said the prosecutor's office in Créteil.

The scientific police services and the Nogent-sur-Marne police station are in charge of the investigations, the public prosecutor added.

"What worries me is whether the fire was accidental or criminal," said Jacques JP Martin, the mayor of this town of more than 30,000 inhabitants south of Paris.

The "very small place of life" was "in a state of significant dilapidation", explained a source familiar with the matter, who specified that no track was privileged for the moment.
