The Regional English Language Bureau of the US Embassy in Nur-Sultan has announced a competition among non-profit organizations to develop and implement the project "Promoting English for Media Literacy in Kazakhstan".

In total, Washington will allocate from one to three grants ranging from $ 30 thousand to $ 100 thousand.

The authors of the document fear that attackers can manipulate public opinion in Kazakhstan through fake news.

“During the pandemic, the volume of misinformation in Kazakhstan has increased.

Since few have received education in the field of media literacy, favorable conditions are created for unscrupulous subjects to manipulate public opinion with the help of fake news, ”the document says.

At the same time, the inclusion of English in the course of the development of media literacy opens up many opportunities for obtaining information through the media, follows from the document.

Thus, Washington intends to "strengthen Kazakhstan's resilience to disinformation by increasing the media literacy of English teachers who will educate the next generation of decision-makers in Kazakhstan."

Students will be able in their free time to attend classes held twice a week by professional English teachers.

Earlier, the US State Department funded a program to "strengthen" the media market in Kazakhstan.

The program was aimed at increasing the professionalism of journalists and reducing the negative impact of fake news in Kazakhstan.
