This morning, Kabul fell into the hands of the Taliban.

Many had feared in advance that the invasion would be followed by bloody battles, but this did not happen.

- Just a little while ago, information came about shootings here at the airport, apart from that, it has been quite calm here tonight.

The big news here is that the Taliban are back in the heart of Kabul, says Samir Abu Eid, in SVT Nyheter's live broadcast on Sunday night.

Waited out the US

However, the fact that so far there has been no major bloodshed does not mean that there is peace in the city of millions.

- Ordinary Afghans are deeply concerned about the future.

Earlier today, photographer Salim Alsabbaghute and I were on the streets of Kabul and met refugees who have come here to Kabul and they are deeply, deeply concerned.

How in principle the whole country could end up under Taliban rule in such a short time is still a difficult question to answer.

But Samir Abu Eid points out that the Taliban movement never disappeared, despite being forced out by the US invasion in 2001.

- They have waited out the United States, they have known that one day they will leave Afghanistan and then they have been prepared to regain control of the country.

"Many Afghans worried"

It is not possible to say what will happen in the future, for example regarding possible negotiations between the Taliban and the government.

However, it is clear that large sections of the civilian population fear a return to the rule that prevailed when the Taliban controlled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001.

- Now many Afghans are worried about severe religious repression by the Taliban.

Many young girls will not be able to go to school, women will not be able to work.

Many now want to leave Afghanistan.
