Afghan President Ashraf Ghani leaves Afghanistan

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani left Afghanistan on Sunday, former Vice President Abdullah Abdullah announced.

"The former Afghan president has left the country," Abdullah, who heads the Supreme Council for National Reconciliation, said in a video clip posted on Facebook.

On Sunday, Afghan and Russian media said that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had left the country after he accepted his resignation as the Taliban advanced towards Kabul.

For its part, the Afghan president's office told Reuters news agency that it could not disclose anything about Ashraf Ghani's movements for security reasons.

For his part, a high-ranking official in the Afghan Ministry of Interior confirmed the authenticity of press reports that Ghani went to Tajikistan.

An informed source told the Russian "Novosti" agency that Ghani from Tajikistan will go to a third country.

The Russian embassy in Afghanistan confirmed that it had received information about Ghani's escape from the presidential palace.

This comes after the Afghan Defense Minister, Bismillah Mohammadi, announced earlier in the day that Ghani handed over responsibility for settling the conflict in the country to political leaders, stressing that a delegation from the Kabul government will head to Doha tomorrow for talks with the "Taliban."

Meanwhile, a Taliban representative said the movement is verifying Ghani's whereabouts.

This comes as Germany closed its embassy in Kabul today with the entry of Taliban insurgents into the Afghan capital.
