“Let’s spare blood” .. Ashraf Ghani’s first statement after his exit from Afghanistan

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani announced Sunday that he left his country to avoid "bloodshed", while acknowledging that "the Taliban have won."

In his first statement after his exit from Afghanistan, Ghani, who did not specify his whereabouts, expressed his confidence that "a large number of citizens would have been killed and Kabul would have been destroyed" if he had remained in Afghanistan.

"The Taliban have won (...) and they are now responsible for the honor of preserving their country," Ghani added in a Facebook message.

The Afghan president said that the Taliban was ready to attack the capital, Kabul in a bloody manner, stressing that it imposed its authority by force of arms.

"I had a difficult choice today: to wait to face the Taliban militants entering the presidential palace, or to get out of the country," Ghani wrote.

"I chose to go out so that I could inject blood," he said.

He said that the Taliban achieved their success by using armed forces and they are now responsible for protecting lives and property and respecting citizens, noting that "many individuals and groups are afraid and worried about the future."

Ghani's words came hours after the head of the Afghan Reconciliation Commission, Abdullah Abdullah, announced that Ashraf Ghani had left the country, declaring that the latter had become the "former president of Afghanistan."

The Taliban movement entered Kabul and officially took over the administration of the Afghan capital within hours, after the security forces fled from it.

The movement ordered its fighters to enter Kabul under the pretext of "preventing looting."
