On August 12, local time, the Japanese government announced that the number of new infections nationwide reached 18,822, a new high since the outbreak. On the same day, the number of new infections in Tokyo reached 4,989, becoming the second highest number of new infections in a single day.
At the epidemic monitoring meeting held in Tokyo on the 12th, experts pointed out that "the spread of the Tokyo epidemic is out of control."
