On an area of seven square kilometers, 15,000 Palestinian citizens live in the town of Beit Sahour, east of Bethlehem in the West Bank, and all postal services for these residents are supervised by a Palestinian girl.

Since the early morning hours, the girl Bisan Hamid has been working with unparalleled effort despite the heat of the sun, and the negative view of her social surroundings, as she is the one who receives parcels from the town's post offices, and distributes them to residential and service facilities on a daily basis.

Bisan Hamid, 27, from the town of Beit Sahour, overcame her living conditions and the negative view of society, to prove her worth and get a job opportunity that earned her the title of the first Palestinian girl to work as a postman. Since the beginning of 2021, Bisan worked in the post office of Bethlehem, before She becomes a postman in Beit Sahour.

fight journey

The journey of struggle and perseverance of the girl, Bissan Hamid, began after graduating from university in 2014, and obtaining a diploma in the production of documentary films from “Dar Al-Kalima College” in her city, Bethlehem, where she did not find a suitable job opportunity for her university major, so she went through a long journey during which she moved between many Institutions in Bethlehem, to obtain a stable source of income for her and her family, but it did not last long.

Bisan says in an exclusive interview with "Emirates Today": "Since graduating from the university, I have not found a suitable place or available opportunity, and before working in the Palestinian Post, I worked in different places and fields, in photography and media, in the field of marketing and sales, but I did not continue in Work, due to the lack of available and appropriate employment opportunities within the country.

After much trouble, Bissan's career witnessed a major transformation, as it began to follow in the footsteps of achieving its ambitions and proving its worth, to have a training opportunity in the post offices of Bethlehem, but the repercussions of the Corona pandemic prevented this opportunity from continuing.

At the beginning of this year, Bisan returned to receive work assignments in the post offices of the city of Bethlehem, after which she obtained an official governmental job in the post offices, which enabled her to supervise the mail in the town of Beit Sahour.

She says, "After the Corona pandemic, I received a job offer at the Palestinian Post Office in the city of Bethlehem, and this offer was very accepted by my family, who encouraged me to go through this new professional experience."

overcoming the odds

The postman (Bisan) faces many difficulties during her work, most notably the sun's rays and the heat of the air.

She says: "My daily job is not without difficulties, the most bitter of which is the difficulty of passing if I cross the military checkpoints. I move between the neighborhoods and villages of the town of Beit Sahour, and in most areas there are checkpoints for the occupation, where the soldiers deliberately delay the movement of Palestinians through these military gates for various reasons. Unknown, and this is causing me to be late for work.”

Moving to another scene, one of the challenges that confronted Bissan's professional career was the view of her community towards her work, and the disapproval of many of her, as she works in a job reserved for men.

She says, "I crossed the psychological barrier towards all the criticism directed at me, directly and indirectly, and I also crossed the wrong stereotype, and replaced it with a bright one."

She added, "I hope that other girls like me in the Palestinian governorates will find suitable job opportunities in the Palestinian Post, and all official and civil institutions, to overcome the obsession of mistrusting women's capabilities within society, where there is no difference between women and men in all fields of work."

The Palestinian postman concludes her speech by saying: “My ambition does not stop at a certain limit, or a specific job. I am continuing on the path of success in my work, to enter into a new and unique experience, and a transitional step in my career.”
