Forest fires broke out again out of control in the Greek Peloponnese peninsula yesterday, under a fire front of about 10 kilometers near the municipality of Gortinia.

Greek media reported that text messages were sent to residents of about 19 villages, calling on them to evacuate the area, and houses were set on fire in the village of Peres on the western side of the Peloponnese.

Emergency crews struggled to create a barrier to prevent the fire from spreading further into the Eliya area, and winds made it difficult for firefighters to contain the fires despite international assistance.

Forest fires remained raging on the Greek island of Wappe, for the ninth consecutive day.

There are hopes that the situation will improve on Greece's second largest island, after the fires have begun to die out simply because there is nothing left to burn.

In addition, since most forest fires elsewhere in Greece have been brought under control, more firefighters can now focus their efforts on Wabe.

Greece has been facing forest fires for days in the hot season, as the fires reached the outskirts of Athens.

In preliminary estimates, the Geological Institute of the University of Athens estimated that 90,000 hectares of land have burned in the country this summer, so far.

At the same time, the Greek government announced that it will support the reconstruction of homes destroyed by the fires at a value of 150,000 euros (175,500 dollars) per home.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that citizens who were affected by the fires can fill out a dedicated form online, from August 18, and will receive the first payment of compensation worth between 500 and 20,000 euros, within days, before reviewing the application in detail.

Businesses and farmers will receive financial support as well, while the homeless will receive a subsidy of 500 euros per month to rent housing until their homes are reconstructed.

• Since most of the wildfires elsewhere in Greece have been brought under control, more firefighters can now focus their efforts on Wapi.
