The Canadian government will appeal the verdict of businessman
Michael Spavor,
whom Prime Minister Justin Trudeau considers "
absolutely unacceptable and unfair
".
His sentence to 11 years in prison comes the day after the rejection of the appeal of
another Canadian
, sentenced to death for drug trafficking in China.
For diplomacy experts, the timing of the Chinese authorities to announce these court decisions is by no means trivial.
Indeed, the number 2 of the telecommunications giant Huawei is currently before a
Canadian court
to decide whether or not to extradite to the United States.
Verdict awaited for other Canadian detainee, Michael Kovrig
The arrest of Meng Wanzhou at the Vancouver airport in December 2018 had also resulted in the imprisonment of Michael Spavor, who has lived in China for several years.
Another Canadian,
Michael Kovrig
, is also
paying the price for this imbroglio
between great powers.
Detained in China for two and a half years, he is awaiting his verdict after an expeditious trial.
