In Euboea, and near Olympia, the fires are still not under control.

But north of Athens, despite new outbreaks, they remained far from residential areas.

If the authorities still recommend evacuating the premises, not all the inhabitants have left villages which are for some affected.

Five kilometers from the village of Varympompi, in front of the security barrier, volunteers are busy.

They manage stocks of food, fruit juice and water, which they distribute to firefighters and residents who have had to evacuate their homes.

“

We have been there since the fires started,”

explains a volunteer from Croix-Rousse.

There, there is no one left, it is dangerous because it is still burning and at any time an electric column can fall - or a tree.

So they can't go home.

Not all of them left the scene.

In the central square of the village, whose surrounding forests are charred, residents face a business now almost reduced to dust.

“

We lived in a very green place, and there, everything is burnt.

From now on, we are seeing how we can survive in a place surrounded by ash and soot.

 "

For Giorgios, it is inconceivable to move: “

I learned that some people who are tenants were thinking of leaving to go elsewhere.

Others say they will come back when it is rebuilt.

My whole family was born here, we've been here for 120 years.

Me, I was born here, I will not leave

”, he says.

However, above the scene, a cloud of smoke continues to emerge from Mount Parnès, which overlooks the village.

In Varympompi, where the fires started in the north of Athens, the situation is more serious.

A cafeteria is destroyed in the center of the village, and the stigmas of the flames can be read on the trees.
