Three children were killed on Monday by lions near Ngorongoro Nature Reserve in Tanzania as they tried to find lost livestock.

Aged 9 to 11, the children had just returned from school and stepped into a forest to look for the animals, said Justine Masejo, Arusha's police chief.

"This is where the lions attacked and killed three children, injuring one (another)," he added.

Frequent problems

Located in the north of the country, the Ngorongoro, a crater known worldwide for its landscapes and its wildlife, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The police chief called on surrounding communities to "take precautions against ferocious beasts, especially when they ask their children to tend the cattle."

Tanzania allows pastoralists to live in national parks and graze their livestock alongside wildlife.

But conflicts between humans and animals, name with lions and elephants, are frequent, the latter sometimes attacking inhabitants, livestock or destroying crops.

Last year, Tanzania extracted 36 lions from Serengeti National Park, near Ngorongoro, after attacks.
