In Russia, over the past day, the coronavirus was detected in 22,660 people.

Among the regions in terms of the number of new cases, the leaders are Moscow (2583), St. Petersburg (1909), Moscow (1394), Nizhny Novgorod (546) and Sverdlovsk (524) regions.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 6,402,564 episodes of the disease have been recorded in the country.

Of these, 5,720,353 people recovered (20,141 - per day).

792 patients died over the past day from complications that developed against the background of COVID-19 and concomitant diseases, and the total number of deaths reached 163,301.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, over 168 million laboratory tests for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus have been performed for all the time, including 536 thousand in the last day.

More than 1.25 million people remain under medical supervision.

According to the chief sanitary doctor of the Russian Federation Anna Popova, in 35 Russian regions there is a worsening of the epidemic situation, and in 15 of them the increase in incidence is exceeding the national average.

She announced this on the air of the TV channel "Russia 1".

“The situation is developing at high numbers for each region, and this suggests that it is too early to weaken restrictions,” she stressed.

The head of Rospotrebnadzor added that in 22 subjects of the federation there is a steady decrease in the daily increase in cases, and in another 28 regions the situation is stabilizing.

At the same time, she reported on 14 "champion regions", in which about 70% of the adult population received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

“And in these regions, as soon as the level is reached, we now see a significant decrease in the incidence and the rate of this decline is much higher than in any other regions.

This is a directly clearly shown result of the effectiveness of vaccination.

The incidence drops very quickly as soon as we overcome this bar, ”she explained.

Meanwhile, Popova noted that while the level of herd immunity in Russia is insufficient to stop the circulation of the virus: "It would be very correct for us to reach this point as quickly as possible, it would be good by September 1."

Note that initially the bar for achieving herd immunity was set at 60%, but in July Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin instructed to work out ways to achieve immunity at a level of at least 80%.

As Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova noted, the country should achieve this indicator by November 1.

The day before, Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko said that 38.9 million people have already been vaccinated against coronavirus in Russia.

In the last week alone, the increase in the number of vaccinated was 4 million.

"The world is in a period of real danger"

The world community has entered "a period of real danger" due to the situation with the spread of COVID-19, said the Director General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“The world is now in a period of real danger.

Many of the gains we have made are now being eroded, ”he said.

Previous successes in combating the pandemic are being lost, he said, as health systems in many countries are overwhelmed, and the increase in the number of infected people has led to a shortage of the treatment needed to save people.

He added that the spread of COVID-19 is being "fueled" by increased social contact, inconsistent health and public policy measures, and "unfair vaccinations."

Gebreyesus reiterated that more than 80% of the coronavirus vaccines were supplied to high- and middle-income countries.

Earlier, the head of WHO called on the world community to introduce a temporary moratorium on booster (additional) vaccinations for those who have already received the vaccine due to a shortage of drugs.

According to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University, more than 4.34 billion vaccinations have been made worldwide.

At the same time, almost 201 million cases of the disease have been recorded since the beginning of the pandemic, most of all in the United States (35.4 million), India (31.8 million) and Brazil (20 million).

More than 4.26 million people worldwide have died from complications related to COVID-19.

The largest number of victims was registered in the USA (615.3 thousand), Brazil (560.7 thousand) and India (426.7 thousand).

Investigation into the source of COVID-19

Against this background, there were new reports that the US intelligence services are investigating an array of genetic data on viruses that were studied at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

According to CNN, citing sources, this could "reveal the origin of the coronavirus."

It is noted that the intelligence has at its disposal a "gigantic catalog of information", which contains "genetic blueprints" taken from samples of viruses studied in the laboratory.

It is not known how the intelligence services gained access to this data set.

According to the source, usually the systems involved in the creation and processing of such genetic data are connected to external cloud servers, which allows them to be hacked.

Officials from the United States and several other Western countries have repeatedly made accusations against China, because, in their opinion, the coronavirus was of laboratory origin.

So, on August 2, members of the Republican Party presented their next report with arguments in favor of this theory.

At the same time, the report was prepared using open data and indirect messages - it did not provide convincing evidence for the theory of laboratory origin.

The purpose of the report is to prepare a legislative response to Beijing, which, according to the American side, should take responsibility for the costs incurred due to the pandemic.

The Chinese side has repeatedly denied baseless accusations against it, and the director of the WHO emergency program, Michael Ryan, noted at the end of May that the media continues to spread messages in which the process of investigating the origin of the coronavirus is highly politicized.
