Some 2,000 California residents were called on Wednesday to evacuate their homes "immediately" as the Dixie Fire, the largest blaze in the state this year, approached by high winds.

"If you had stayed, you should evacuate to the EAST, IMMEDIATELY!"

The Plumas Country Sheriff's Department tweeted, addressing residents of the communities of Greenville and Chester.

“If you can't evacuate (…), take refuge on the baseball field at Chester College,” he added.

The Dixie Fire has been raging in the forests of northern California since mid-July, in connection with the climate crisis, which is causing peaks of heat and drought across the world, especially in North America.
