In a mysterious incident that surprised social networking sites in Egypt, and revived the controversy over the negative effects of these platforms on young people, a teenager documented his last moments before committing suicide, and published them through the "Tik Tok" application.

Muhammad Reda, 15, used to present funny content documenting his daily life. He chose for the last time a tragic end, as he made a gallows in his room from a plastic rope, and fixed it in the iron holder of the ceiling fan, and before he implemented his suicide decision, he sent a video behind the scenes of his suicide attempt to his friend through an application. WhatsApp, and his friend tried to save him to no avail.

Official investigations revealed that the suicide was sitting with a number of his friends on the day of the incident, and he asked one of them to leave the place, to send him an important message via WhatsApp, and his friend had already left the place, and an hour later he received a video showing his willingness to commit suicide by a rope hanging from the ceiling of his bedroom .

The friend rushed to Muhammad’s house, and knocked on the door to no avail. He used the neighbors to break the door, only to find Muhammad’s body hanging in the bedroom, so he went to his father at his workplace, and told him about the accident.

According to the investigations published by the Egyptian newspapers, the family did not charge anyone, and said that it was surprised by his death, and the investigations did not reveal the reasons that prompted him to commit suicide so far.

Reda's suicide is the second in two months associated with the "Tik Tok" application, where last June witnessed the suicide of a girl who jumped from the third floor, after her mother threatened her to withdraw her mobile phone that she used to film "Tik Tok" videos.

The investigations revealed that a dispute arose between the 17-year-old girl and her mother, due to the girl’s excessive use of the “Tik Tok” application and constantly posting videos through it, and when the mother threatened her daughter to withdraw her mobile phone, in an attempt to correct her behavior, the latter jumped from the third floor, to her death .

The “Tik Tok” application raises successive crises in Egypt due to the state of obsession with it among teenagers, as young men and girls present scenes and snapshots of the reality of their daily lives, as some dance to the tunes of music, and others present a kind of funny and exciting situations, in search of material profit and fame. .

The authorities have been active in arresting teenage girls and women on the pretext of "spreading vice" through communication platforms in what is known as the "Tik Tok girls" phenomenon, the last of which was last month, when the security services arrested a girl named Moka Hijazi, and another nicknamed "The Hohos".

The "Tik Tok" application led a number of girls to prison, most notably Haneen Hosam, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for spreading immorality and immorality, human trafficking, and other crimes that increased with the girls' dream of quick easy profit.

In the same case, Mawaddah Al-Adham, who is also one of the famous "Tik Tok", was sentenced to 6 years in prison, along with 3 others who received a 6-year prison sentence for each of them.

Parliament demands

The House of Representatives witnessed 10 requests for briefing, over the course of its first session, which ended a few days ago, about the negative effects of “Tik Tok”, especially after the case of Hanin Hosam, calling for the application to be closed permanently in the country.

The Communications and Information Technology Committee of the Council discussed, more than once, requests for briefing about “Tik Tok” and similar applications, including what was submitted by Council member Walaa Al-Tamami, about the negative effects of this application, and called for the development of radical solutions to confront and block some dangerous applications.

A member of the Communications Committee in the House of Representatives, Ahmed Heta, confirmed in press statements that he submitted a request for a briefing to both the Prime Minister and the Minister of Communications to block “Tik Tok” and another request for a briefing to block an application or game that offers the demolition of the Holy Kaaba, and Representative Mahmoud Abu al-Khair announced that he submitted a request to block all Pornographic sites in the country, but the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority confirmed that it is not possible and that it is not within its competence.

The "Tik Tok" platform issued a statement, last Saturday, published by Egyptian newspapers, confirming that providing a safe and positive experience for its users on the application is the most important priority, and announced the removal of the account of the woman known in the media as "The Hohos".

"We enforce a comprehensive set of Community Guidelines to help users understand unacceptable content and behavior on our platform, and we also crack down on content and accounts that violate these guidelines," the platform added.

"Our policies strictly prohibit nudity, pornography, and sexually explicit content on the platform," the statement said.
