As in the previous year, the Frankfurt Marathon is canceled due to the corona pandemic. The organizer motion events announced this on Wednesday. In agreement with the city of Frankfurt, it was decided to cancel the marathon planned for October 31. In view of the ongoing restrictions for major events as well as all the uncertainties that exist due to virus mutations and a possible renewed pandemic wave in autumn, this step has unfortunately become inevitable. The implementation of a world-class event requires a safe preparation and planning, which the organizer is not possible under the given circumstances. The event, the largest of its kind in Germany alongside the Berlin Marathon, had to be canceled last year.

“In the current situation, the event cannot be calculated for us, because at the moment nobody knows what the legal situation will be on the day of the event,” said race director Jo Schindler.

"But we need a clear planning basis now at the latest, less than three months before the race weekend."

In the past, the Frankfurt Marathon brought over 25,000 runners to the streets of Frankfurt every year, and the event is also a top international event with world-class runners.

Already in planning for 2022

In addition to the main competition, the marathon, the other competitions - relay marathon, mini marathon and Struwwelpeter run, as well as the supporting program - were canceled. The participants have already been contacted and fully informed about the cancellation and the effects. Primarily, as with the cancellation of the previous year, the participants will be offered a voucher in the course of the event being reversed. This can be used to register for the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon in 2022 and 2023.

“The Mainova Frankfurt Marathon is one of our major major events in the sports city of Frankfurt. The oldest German city marathon has long been an institution in top-class sport as well as in popular sport and attracts thousands of athletes to the sports city of Frankfurt am Main every year, ”said Markus Frank, city councilor and sports director of the city of Frankfurt. “I have great respect for the decision of the organizers to cancel the marathon again in 2021 at an early stage. This cancellation hits us very much. An adapted run with distance rules and much more is not nearly the rousing event that we have known and appreciated in Frankfurt am Main for decades. That is why we are looking forward together and hope for a good restart in 2022. "

The organizer is now planning to restart in 2022, when the run should take place on October 30th. "We are confident that the corona pandemic will allow events on the scale of the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon again next year," says Race Director Schindler "
