August 03, 2021A policeman died after being stabbed during the violence that broke out at the bus stop outside the Pentagon. The police said so.

The Pentagon, the US defense headquarters, was temporarily blocked after gunshots were fired near the building's entrance. A Pentagon police officer was stabbed, and later died, officials told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

More details on the violence were expected at a Pentagon press conference. The connection between the shooting and the officer's stabbing was not immediately clear. Authorities did not immediately provide details or the sequence of events.

The incident occurred on a subway bus platform that is part of the Pentagon Transit Center, the Pentagon Protection Force Protection Agency tweeted. The facility is within walking distance of the Pentagon building, which is located in Arlington County, Virginia just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC.An

Associated Press reporter near the building heard several gunshots, then a pause, then at least one more shot. Another AP reporter heard the police yelling "shooter".

A Pentagon announcement said the facility was closed due to "police activity". The agency responsible for security at the building, the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, tweeted just before noon that the scene of the incident was safe. The blockade was lifted except for the area around the crime scene.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were at the White House meeting with President Joe Biden at the time of the shooting.

In 2010, two Pentagon Force Protection Agency agents were injured when a gunman approached them in a security check area. The surviving agents returned fire, fatally wounding the hitman, identified as John Patrick Bedell.
