Chinanews, August 3, according to the US "World Journal" report, although the Chinese workers who built railways in the United States in the 19th century contributed a lot, they have always been ignored by mainstream society.

Today, the Chinese American community actively promotes the memorial and promotion of this history.

In the small town of Carlin, Nevada, the remains of 13 Chinese railway workers were found, which aroused the attention of Chinese communities across the United States.

The local area plans to hold another commemorative ceremony on September 6 (Monday), and the overseas Chinese in San Francisco also plans to organize a delegation to participate in the commemoration.

The discovery process is full of legends

Li Dianbang, head of the historical and cultural relics team of the Chinese General Assembly Hall, said that the remains of the 13 Chinese were buried there more than 100 years ago.

Now the local commemorative ceremony is to be held, and the overseas Chinese in San Francisco will also support it.

He pointed out that the Chinese General Assembly Hall and Ningyang Assembly Hall had donated money to the local area to commemorate the Chinese railway workers.

The discovery process of these 13 Chinese remains is also full of legends.

In the 1990s, a Carlin citizen found 13 coffins and remains underground in his backyard.

Later, these remains were transferred to the University of Nevada and other places for research, and it was discovered that they were buried in the local railway Chinese workers in Carlin City in the 1880s.

In 2018, after the promotion of the Chinese community and local Chinese Wang Lizhu, the 13 remains formally returned to Kalin City, where they were buried in the local cemetery.

At that time, a temporary burial ceremony was held in Kalin to commemorate these Chinese workers.

The permanent tombstone will be unveiled

The Chinese Railway Workers Association (CRWDA) in Salt Lake City, Utah is also actively promoting this.

The association's founder and current chairman, Margaret Yee, said that this year's event was jointly promoted by the Carlin City Government, the Association of Chinese Railway Workers' Descendants, and the San Francisco Chinese Association.

She pointed out that after the burial ceremony in 2018, there has been no formal and permanent tombstone completion.

After entering the epidemic period, related activities have been postponed.

And this year's event is to unveil a permanent tombstone to commemorate these 13 ancestors.

Yu Huangkengjuan said that the Chinese railway workers have made great contributions to the United States and changed the transportation in the United States.

She pointed out that many people don't know these things, so she established the Association of Descendants of Chinese Railway Workers, and must let the mainstream society know about the contributions of Chinese people, so that these deeds can be added to school textbooks and be widely known.

She also pointed out that the Kalin City Council has been very responsible and dedicated in promoting this matter.

Carlin City Event Golden Spike Festival Follow-up

In 2019, Utah's "Golden Spike" (Golden Spike) was held to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad (Pacific Railroad). Tens of thousands of people participated in the grand event. At that time, the Federal Minister of Transportation Zhao Xiaolan and Utah Officials at all levels attended.

The Chinese people contributed a lot to the construction of the railway that year. Nearly 14,000 Chinese laborers traveled from China to the United States to participate in this project.

At that time, almost all Chinese American communities supported it.

Yu Huangkengjuan and the late Judge Mike Kwan are both representatives of the promoters.

The event in Kalin City is also a follow-up to the Golden Spike Festival.

It is reported that there were 13 bodies in Kalin City. Yu Huangkengjuan stated that when they were found, only two had names, all with the surname Yu.

Yu Huangkengjuan said that Yu Fengcai Tang in the United States is also actively supporting this commemorative event.

At present, the overseas Chinese in San Francisco are also planning to organize a group at their own expense to the event in Carlin, Nevada on September 6.

The two places are eight hours apart by car, so the overseas Chinese plan to rent a bus, which will be a two-day and one-night trip.
