• In a shirt of eleven rods (I) José Ignacio Goirigolzarri: "At home my wife keeps the accounts, that's why they are ordered"

QUESTION.

How was your first date, 20 years later?

MARILIA ANDRÉS.

The first thing was a hug.

No mask and nothing.

MARTA BOTÍA.

It was so easy.

We laugh.

I think that the sense of humor has always been what has united us, before we knew that we both sang or made music.

Q. Has the worm in the gut danced again?

Will there be new themes?

MA

The most beautiful thing about this stage is that we have decided to celebrate 25 years of the first day that the first song was played, that people listened to us, that we were able to enjoy this profession, and that is being the celebration, important enough not to mix it with other demands.

We have missed each other for many years and each concert is being very special.

What arises from there we cannot and will not decide at the beginning.

Q. A whole generation has passed.

How would you tell the young people what Ella Baila Sola is (or what was)?

MB

It is, it is.

MA

I would tell them to listen to the first album, I think our songs are the ones that actually speak for us.

People listened to us before seeing our faces.

MB

The image did not matter at the time.

Man, you were trying to be better than when you take out the trash, but our image was ours.

We dressed as we were.

Q. They faced an industry that wanted a more sexual image.

Is it difficult to be a woman in an image-based industry?

MB

That has changed a lot over the years.

Now everything is much more visual, much faster.

You have to stand out and the image is taken care of much more.

There is so much on offer that you have to be like a

flash

for people to see you.

Q. Would a phenomenon like Ella Baila Sola be possible today?

MA

Things are happening all the time and people's talent, even what we don't see, is influencing different environments.

Maybe other styles are the ones that now attract more attention, but there are small sparkles that we are discovering because I think we are looking to connect with something.

In the end the styles are relative.

I imagine that every time we are going to dilute prejudices and ideas and borders in every way, also in music.

Maybe Ella Baila Sola would not be possible exactly like 20 years ago, but with another way.

P. They created something new, a formula that did not exist in Spain.

MB It

was what we did.

It was not a product, nothing prepared, but for us the natural thing was to sit down, pick up the guitar and sing.

We see it now with time and hey, it is true.

MA

They had already made their way many, many before, but that year we had a lot of repercussion and maybe two women singing from the female point of view with a guitar did have something different.

At that time we were not aware, then we have realized it.

Q. Their lyrics were also revolutionary, they have composed feminist and anti-racist hymns ... Do you think they made a protest song?

MB

No, please.

I never felt like a feminist.

From my point of view, which is very personal, the lyrics have been from the female point of view.

It was telling things in a very obvious way, from intellectual and emotional equality but with a feminine touch.

Glob of mascara is obviously feminine, not feminist.

I do not like -istos or -istas, and I think it was not.

The same now, with the moment that is being lived, you take those songs and you can say: it was a hymn.

Anthem yes, feminist no.

We didn't mean to.

Q. Are you afraid that your music can be used in that way?

MB

In the end, each one uses the songs freely, for what it serves him, for what it helps him, for what makes him happy.

When music is out in the world it is for you to take it and do what you want with it.

But I wouldn't want to sell it like that.

MA

That is somewhat personal, because it is true that each one interprets the song, takes it where they want and it is true that it paves the way.

I do see that it empowered women in some way, we can call it whatever we want, but I do believe that it has opened paths and has given strength to many people.

I know it from the

feedback

, there have even been punk music groups of women who have taken a song like

Woman Vase

and have taken it to their style.

P. Has it ever weighed on your solo careers to continue being the blonde and the brunette of Ella Baila Sola?

MB

For me it is an honor.

It is beautiful what has happened to us and that people remember you for that it is precious.

If it hadn't existed, who knows if we'd be doing solo stuff from the start.

MA

The truth is that it was fortunate, wanting to make music and suddenly life puts the necessary pieces in front of you.

It was lucky to meet us, lucky to be able to enjoy it and then to be able to continue with our profession.

P. How much is there of truth and how much of urban legend in your personal disagreements?

MA

In any couple, on stage or in any situation, there are always differences.

And I think that what enriches this group is precisely that we have different points of view on many things.

For us that is what Ella Baila Sola does.

But it is true that there are stages, and that it is even necessary to miss you, stop for a moment and miss you to be able to resume.

P. 20 years of hiatus ...

MB

We spend almost that time together.

Before we were in front of the public, we had been there for many years and for us it was also nice to say: we are going to make our lives and take a break, to do other things.

What is said or not said ... We could not be controlling everything, but for us it was very natural.

P. There are those who say that they return now for money ...

MA

Well good luck.

Look, I think that in the end what these years have taught us, also the pandemic, has been to reorganize our values, and then everyone can interpret it however they want.

We are here celebrating all that beauty that we have lived and for us it is very clear.

We did not even know if we were going to be able to do concerts, but this was the year of the 25th anniversary, of the silver anniversary, it was not the next.

P. Your former 'manager' Gonzalo Benavides complains that they have left him out on this return.

MA

We owe him a lot of love, we would not have been here without him.

He is a very important piece and a wonderful person, whatever he said.

We all have bad times.

P. Does Ella Baila Sola are just Marta and Marilia?

MB

It has always been like this.

He was our

manager

, but Ella Baila Sola is much more than that.

Q. 20 years later, is it better to dance alone or with someone else?

MA

I think you have to learn both.

The beauty is being comfortable with you, loving you a lot and being able to dance yourself, enjoy it and share it with others.
