A Belarusian activist recently reported missing was found dead in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

Vitaly Schischow was discovered hanged in a park near his home on Tuesday, the Kiev police said.

Schischow headed the organization “Belarusian House in Ukraine”, which helps Belarusians in exile to arrive.

The organization announced on Monday that Schischow had not returned from jogging.

According to media reports, he had previously complained of feeling persecuted.

The police say they are investigating murder.

Personal items and his mobile phone were found near Schischow's body.

According to the "Belarusian House", Shishev fled to Ukraine last year for fear of the authoritarian authorities in his country after participating in protests critical of the government.

The Belarusian ruler Alexandr Lukashenko had a fighter plane intercept a passenger plane while flying over Belarus and arrested a well-known opposition member and his girlfriend after the forced landing.

Western states have therefore issued sanctions against the government in Minsk.

Many Belarusians are fleeing the repression of the state apparatus abroad. In the past few days, the case of the Belarusian Olympic athlete Kristina Timanovskaya had caused an international stir. Timanovskaya was supposed to be kidnapped from Tokyo after criticizing sports officials in her home country. The 24-year-old is now under the protection of the Japanese police and is expected to leave for Poland soon.
