Biden and Trudeau discuss "arbitrary detention" of two Canadian citizens in China

US President Joe Biden discussed with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau yesterday the issue of "arbitrary detention" of two Canadian citizens.

The two leaders discussed during a phone call the issue of Beijing's detention two years ago, former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig, and Canadian businessman Michael Spavor, both of whom are being held on espionage charges.

"The Prime Minister and the President discussed China's arbitrary detention of Canadian citizens Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig," Trudeau's office said in a statement. "Both leaders agreed on the need for their immediate release."

The two men were detained apparently in response to Canada's arrest of Huawei CEO Meng Wanzhou, on the basis of a US extradition warrant issued against her.

A statement from Biden's office said Spavor and Kovrig were "unjustly arrested."
