Several people were injured in an explosion near the home of the defense minister in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

At least six patients had been brought in, said the non-governmental organization Emergency, which operates a hospital in central Kabul, on Twitter on Tuesday.

The politician Junus Kanuni said in a voice message shared via Whatsapp that the explosion occurred at a guest house of the incumbent Defense Minister Bismillah Khan Mohammadi.

The minister himself was with him at a funeral at the time of the explosion.

According to an assistant to the minister, his family had been brought to safety.

Heard two more explosions

Details of the incident initially remained unclear.

The Interior Ministry only confirmed an explosion in the Scherpur district in the center of the city, where many high-ranking politicians and government officials live.

A spokesman for the Kabul police announced that security forces and special police forces were on site.

After the first massive explosion, at least two other smaller explosions could be heard in the center.

Local media also reported gunshots and that attackers had broken into the guest house.

So far, no one has confessed to the attack.

In the past, the militant Islamist Taliban and the terrorist militia “Islamic State” (IS) reported attacks in Kabul.

In the capital, Kabul, the number of major car bomb attacks and suicide bombers had declined since early 2020.

Most recently in May, at least 85 people, the majority of whom were schoolgirls, were killed in three successive explosions in the west of the city.
