The Council of the European Union on Monday imposed new restrictive measures on eight leaders of the Daniel Ortega regime, including his wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo, as

"responsible for serious human rights violations

or actions that undermine democracy and the Rule of Law in Nicaragua ".

As reported by

the Council, sanctions regarding persons indicated

"and are designed so they do not harm the population and the economy ,

" Nicaraguans

. Currently there are fourteen people in the Daniel Ortega regime to whom restrictive measures are applied, which consist of an immobilization of assets and the veto to receive funds from companies and citizens of the EU. Likewise, those who are on the sanctioned list cannot enter the territory of the EU or transit through it.

The political situation in Nicaragua deteriorated even more in recent months,

with "the political use of the judicial system

, the exclusion of candidates from the elections and the arbitrary disqualification of opposition parties," said the EU, which stressed that these Actions "further undermine the credibility of the electoral process, already hampered by a reform that did not comply with the recommendations of the OAS and EU observation missions."

The EU repeatedly urged the Nicaraguan government to fulfill its own commitments, the Nicaraguan Constitution and international laws and regulations on human rights, but from Europe they regretted

"the arrest of a seventh possible presidential candidate last weekend,"

which which, in his opinion, "illustrates the magnitude of the repression in Nicaragua and projects a disturbing image for the next elections."

As in previous statements, the EU strongly condemned the systematic repression by the Nicaraguan authorities, and called for the repeal of restrictive laws, such as the law regulating foreign agents.

On the other hand, he demanded

"the immediate and unconditional release of political prisoners

, as well as full respect for human rights and the civil and political rights of all Nicaraguan citizens."
