The Myanmar National Management Committee issued an order on August 1st local time stating that in order to further effectively implement the "five-step" road map and the "nine goals" formulated by the National Management Committee, it decided to reorganize the National Management Committee into a caretaker government. The chairman of the National Management Committee, Min Aung Lai, serves as the country’s prime minister.

On the same day, the chairman of the National Management Committee, Min Aung Hlaing, said in a televised speech on the committee’s half-year in power that the preparations for the next general election will end in August 2023, and a free and fair multi-party democratic general election will be held before the end of that year.

Myanmar will hold general elections in November 2020, and the National League for Democracy (NLD) won more than half of the federal parliamentary seats.

The Myanmar military and the NLD had differences over the results of the general election. The military believed that there was fraud in the general election and demanded an investigation and postponed the convening of a new federal parliament meeting.

But the NLD refused.

On February 1 this year, Myanmar President Win Myint, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and some senior officials of the Democratic League were detained by the military.

The Myanmar military subsequently declared a one-year state of emergency, and national power was transferred to the commander-in-chief of the National Defense Forces Min Aung Lai.

The Union Election Commission of Myanmar issued an announcement on July 26, stating that the general election held on November 8, 2020 was unlawful and unfair, and the result of the election was abolished.
