Aircraft and helicopters water bombs from the air and from the mountain edge smoke is seen rising towards the sky.

This is how Stefan Hazianastasiou describes the surroundings in the Kato Kalamonas area on the island of Rhodes.

- We were very worried yesterday when the planes could not fly anymore.

Then it burned quite uncontrollably.

At eleven or twelve o'clock we saw how the whole mountain began to burn all of a sudden.

The fire spread very quickly and it was very nasty.

There are concerns about proliferation

On Sunday, a fire broke out that destroyed large parts of the electricity grid in Rhodes.

On Monday, it is said not yet to be under control, but the situation looks better.

- On the other hand, we do not know what it will be like tonight when planes and helicopters can no longer be in the air because it will be dark.

So there is some concern that it will start to spread again, says Stefan Hazianastasiou.

A large force with 300 firefighters, two firefighting aircraft and five helicopters is also working to put out a major forest fire near Patras, about 200 km west of Athens.

According to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the worst heat wave in the country since 1987 and the heat seems to be holding up.

- They warn of up to 45 degrees, and it is hot even to be Greece, says SVT's meteorologist Nils Holmqvist.

He also says that the heat persists even at night, which becomes tropical nights with over 35 degrees.

Ongoing fires in Turkey

Fires are also raging in more places in Europe.

Since Wednesday last week, it has been burning in forests and land in Turkey.

Eight people have so far been confirmed dead and near the popular tourist resorts of Marmaris and Antalya, several major fires are still not under control.

At the same time, more than 800 fires have flared up in Italy over the weekend and hundreds of people have been forced to evacuate from the Italian tourist resort of Pescara.
