Qatar's Mutaz Issa Barshim and Italy's Gianmarco Tampere shared the gold medal in the men's high jump competition in the men's athletics competitions at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Barshim and Tampere scored 2.37 meters in the final on Sunday to share the gold medal.

Belarusian Maxim Ndasekau won the bronze medal.

Barshim (30 years old) and Tampere (29 years) succeeded in exceeding the height of 2.37 meters from the first attempt, and all previous heights from the first attempt, and each of them failed in the three attempts to cross the height of 2.39 meters.

After a short talk with the referee, Barshim and Tampere agreed not to play a playoff to share the gold.

Barshim completed the only gold short of his vaults in his amazing high jump career.

At the 2012 London Olympics, the Qatari rider won bronze, which was later promoted to silver, and another silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, then won the world championship twice in a row in 2017 and 2019.

This is Qatar's second gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics after the gold weightlifter Faris Ibrahim in the weightlifting competitions.
