Urgent warnings of the extinction of donkeys in the world

New warnings have been issued by the World Veterinarians Federation during the past few days for fear of the extinction of the donkey genus in Africa, in light of the increasing demand for trade in donkey skins for export to the Chinese pharmaceutical and cosmetics markets, and the rates of illegal trade in donkey skins have increased from 3 3.5 million donkey skins per year.

This warning was not the first of its kind, as the British organization known as the "donkey shelter", in November 2019, had previously issued reports warning that half of the world's donkeys will disappear during the next five years, due to the slaughter of millions annually due to the Chinese need for about 4.8 million donkeys per year. To meet the demand for traditional Chinese medicine, which relies on the “gelatin” substance found in its skins in the belief that it improves blood circulation and treats anemia, according to the British newspaper, “The Guardian”.

According to the Egyptian newspaper Al-Watan

The former head of the Egyptian Veterinarians Syndicate, Dr. Sami Taha, confirmed to Al-Watan newspaper that there is a so-called ecological balance and associated with it the presence of animals, birds, insects and donkeys is an element within the system, pointing out that this animal, estimated to number in Egypt at approximately 1.8 million donkeys, is part of the system The economic work of the Egyptian farmer and the cost of his food is much less than the fuel consumed by the “truecycle”, which some groups are trying to rely on as a substitute for the “donkey”, which indicates that economic development with the mechanization of transport and agriculture in general has significant effects on the population of donkeys.

The former head of the Veterinarians Syndicate added that about 10 years ago, the demand from China increased to import donkey skins from Egypt in order to use it in their medical research, and therefore there is a warning about the possibility of facing the extinction of this animal, as well as the bad use of meat in the event that its skins are disposed of and slaughtered in large quantities. The Ministry of Agriculture must suspend export approvals in order to preserve the ecological balance.
