July 31, 2021 The Ocean Viking collected 175 migrants who were aboard boats "in an emergency situation" off the Libyan coast. This was announced by Sos Mediterranee, the European NGO to which the rescue ship belongs.

First he rescued 57 people who were on board a rubber dinghy; a few hours later he recovered 54 migrants from another boat (and "some had burns caused by fuel"), finally collected 64 people on board a wooden boat. Among all 175 people rescued at sea, there are at least two pregnant women and 33 minors, of which 22 are unaccompanied.

According to the International Organization for Migration, at least 1,146 people trying to reach Europe have already died in the Mediterranean in the first half of 2021.
