On Thursday, an oil tanker from an Israeli-owned shipping company off the coast of Oman was attacked.

Two crew members, a British and a Romanian, were killed in the attack, which according to the United States was probably carried out by a drone.

On Friday, Israel blamed Iran for the attack.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid called for international action: "I have instructed the embassies in Washington and London to work with their interlocutors in the country's governments and with relevant delegates at the UN headquarters in New York," he wrote on Twitter.

Israeli Foreign Minister: "Iran exports terrorism"

"Iran is not only a problem for Israel, but also exports terrorism, destruction and instability that affect us all," he said, adding that he had spoken to British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab: "I mentioned the need to respond strongly to the attack there a British citizen was killed. "

Iran has not commented on Yair Lapid's statement.

However, the Iranian television channel Al-Alam reported, citing an anonymous source, that the attack was a response to an Israeli bombing raid on an airport in Syria, Yle writes.

In addition to Israel, the United States and several European sources accuse Iran of the attack, but there is still no evidence and many details are still unclear.

A "shadow war" that has become deadly

The ship, named Mercer Street, is operated by the Israeli-owned shipping company Zodiac Maritime.

According to the company, the ship was on its way from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Fujariah in the United Arab Emirates when the attack occurred.

The ship was then escorted by the US Navy to a safe place.

In the last six months, a number of Israeli and Iranian ships have been subjected to attacks - for which the two countries accuse each other. Iran and Israel have long fought a low-intensity conflict, according to the BBC, which calls it a shadow war. Thursday's attack can, however, be seen as an escalation as it led to the death of two people, writes Yle. In the past, injuries have been extremely rare.
