A man was indicted on Saturday for "murder" after the death on July 22 in the village of Souich (Pas-de-Calais) of his ex-partner, hit with several stab wounds, announced the Béthune prosecutor's office in a press release.

This 34-year-old truck driver, who had tried to kill himself after the fact, was taken into police custody "once out of danger" and declared during his hearing "not to have intended to kill his ex -companion ”, indicated the deputy public prosecutor, Guillaume Dupont.

This Saturday, he was indicted on counts of murder and serious degradation and placed in pre-trial detention. Already known to the courts for acts of falsification of checks, theft in meetings, contempt and rebellion, he had never been convicted of violence, specifies Guillaume Dupont. The victim, aged 36 and mother of four children aged 6 to 18, had filed two handrails with the gendarmerie in March 2021, concerning "the separation of the couple and the terms of custody of the children".

"Subject to any new elements, no previous event requiring intervention by the police or gendarmerie at the home of this couple, in particular for violence, was noted," the press release noted.

It is estimated that nearly 210,000 women suffer domestic violence each year in France.

In 2020, 90 women were killed by their partner or ex-partner, according to the latest official figures.
