Five students created a device and sterilization materials that are used to make school door handles non-transmitting viruses, to enhance precautionary measures and measures in light of the current situation to limit the spread of the “Corona” virus, and can be used in the safe return of students to their schools for the next academic year.

The device project was implemented by Maryam Allawi, Muhammad Ibrahim, Muhammad Zayan, Youssef Mahfouz, and Zeina Naim, who are studying in the sixth grade at GEMS Founders School Al Mizhar.

The students said that they aimed from the project to find a more effective alternative than chemical-based sterilization and cleaning materials, to make the tools that the student uses in his daily life - especially door handles - safer against the transmission of viruses, explaining that the project consists of a glass tube surrounding the door handle, and covered with a cover Made of ground titanium dioxide, this thin coating can break down bacteria through a chemical reaction stimulated by ultraviolet light, and Arduino-based heat sensors and an LED display help monitor the heat of people passing through the door.

They pointed out that the device works in the manner of an alarm system for thermal cameras located in schools, shopping centers and others, but with minimal human intervention, noting that the project is low-cost, and reduces the risks of viral diseases.

The students stated that they present the idea of the project as a solution that helps reduce the risks of the spread of the Corona virus and preserve their community, and in application of what they have learned in computer thinking and computer science lessons at school to work on realizing their innovations on the ground, in addition to helping teachers of computer thinking during the preparation and production period.
