Ethiopian Selemon Barega was crowned Olympic champion in the 10,000m ahead of the big favorite, the Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei, world record holder for the distance, on Friday in Tokyo.

Barega won in 27 min 43 sec 22 ahead of Cheptegei (27 min 43 sec 63) and the other Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo (27 min 43 sec 88).

This is the first major title in the career of Barega (21), second in the 2019 Worlds over 5,000 m.

Frenchman Morhad Amdouni finished 10th and first in Europe, beating the French record (27 min 53 sec 58).
