Caleb Shepherd made new Olympic history on Friday by becoming the first man to win a medal in the women's category by leading New Zealand in the eight-board rowing as helmsman at the Tokyo Games.

An amendment to the contest rules in 2017 removed gender restrictions for the front helmsman, so Shepherd could join Ella Greenslad, Emma Dyke, Lucy Sporse, Grace Prendergast, Keri Gowler, Kelsey Bevan, Jackie Gawler and Beth Ross on the podium.

The New Zealand team took the silver behind the gold medalist Canadian team, and outperformed the Chinese team that took the bronze, which also had a man as helmsman, Deshang Zhang, who booked a place in the annals of history behind Shepherd.

The New Zealand portal "Stuff. CONZ" quoted Shepherd as saying, "This is the best we can do today, it was an amazing thing, we did our best, it was a good thing."
