July 29, 2021 Former American Cardinal Theodore McCarrick was indicted for pedophilia in Massachusetts.

He is the highest prelate in the US who gets into trouble with the justice system for a case of sexual abuse of a minor. The news is reported by various US media, in particular the Boston Globe.

McCarrick was accused of sexually assaulting a boy who was 16 at the time. The abuse allegedly took place in the seventies, during a wedding reception at Wellesley College, a women's university in Massachusetts.

The former cardinal, one of the most prominent prelates of the Catholic Church in the US, was reduced to the lay state in 2019 for homosexual abuse of adults and minors. In 2018 he was removed from the public ministry and then resigned from the college of cardinals. However, he had never yet gotten into trouble with criminal justice.
