"The investigating authorities of the Investigative Committee of Russia in the Republic of Mordovia are investigating a criminal case opened on the death of three men from methyl alcohol poisoning (part 3 of article 109 of the Criminal Code of Russia)," the message says.

As specified, the victims shared alcohol, which, at the request of one of the men, was acquired by an acquaintance on the M-5 Ural highway and brought to the Chamzinsky district. 

"Investigators detained a 38-year-old resident of the city of Ryazan, who, according to preliminary data, has been selling surrogate alcohol for several years," the Investigative Committee added.

The circumstances of the incident are currently being established.

Earlier it was reported that investigators opened a criminal case after the death of four people due to counterfeit poisoning in the Alikovsky region of the Republic of Chuvashia.
