More and more Swedes are buying a motorhome or caravan.

Sales increased already last year, and this year it gained further momentum.

But not all motorhome owners are aware of the rules - for example, that it is not allowed to drive in the terrain.

The worst is along the coast, SVT's tour of county administrative boards shows.

Gotland has long had major problems with motorhomes that are out in the terrain in nature reserves, as well as Öland.

On the two limestone islands there are driving-friendly, but sensitive, beach meadows and other places that are destroyed by heavy vehicles.

On Öland, the number of motorhome-borne visitors has increased in recent years, especially in the northern parts of the island.

- It has led to traffic and parking problems, in some cases of a sensitive nature.

We receive many emails and phone calls from both residents and visitors about this, says Karin Bergman, rural director at the County Administrative Board in Kalmar County.

Latrines are emptied in the reserve

The Scanian coast is also heavily affected by motorhome tourism.

- This time of year it is full on the coast.

It has increased significantly in recent years and it is noticeable in the protected areas.

Many behave well, but too many are in places where you are not allowed to be, says Fredrik Ståhlberg, manager at Stenshuvud National Park.

Some drive in the terrain, others take up large parts of parking spaces to, for example, exhibit outdoor furniture.

In addition, it happens that latrine tanks are emptied out in nature.

- In addition to violating a number of regulations, you limit accessibility for others, says Fredrik Ståhlberg.

Warns of restrictions

Fredrik Ståhlberg fears that the development with more and more motorhomes risks leading to limited freedom.

Elsewhere in Europe, authorities have put up barriers to keeping motorhomes away from hard-hit areas.

- If it continues with negligence, it will probably be the case in Sweden as well.

In addition to Skåne, Gotland and Kalmar counties, Halland and Västra Götaland also state that there are problems with bus cars that break rules.
