This is a first since the spring 2020 confinement. Faced with a surge in Covid-19 cases, partial confinement during the day, "reinforced by a strict curfew from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.", will be implemented in Reunion this weekend "for a period of two weeks", announced Thursday, July 29, the prefect of Reunion, Jacques Billant.

"From 5 am to 6 pm, travel is limited to a radius of 10 km around his home from Monday to Saturday" and this radius is "lowered to 5 km on Sunday," said Jacques Billant, stressing that the inhabitants of Reunion will be able to only "come and go, within a radius of 10 km, in stores", where the mask must be worn continuously.

"In the evening, we aim to stay at home and go out only for a compelling reason," said the prefect during a press conference, accompanied by the director general of the regional health agency ( ARS) from Reunion, Martine Ladoucette.

Closure of restaurants, bars and sports halls

On Sunday, the radius is "lowered to 5 km" so as to "limit family and friendly reunions if they generate contamination," said the prefect. To move within these 5 km or 10 km radius, "you will need to bring proof of address and identity document". Beyond that, it will take "a certificate of compelling reason," he said.

"During the next 15 days, only establishments open to the public in which the mask cannot be worn continuously will be closed," added Jacques Billant, citing restaurants, bars, sports halls, places covered with sporting activity, "until the application of the next health pass law".

Groupings in public spaces are limited to six people and picnics will be prohibited.

"The situation is very worrying today and obliges us in terms of strengthening measures to manage the epidemic", warned Jacques Billant, speaking of "unprecedented exponential epidemic growth".

The incidence rate reached "350" cases per 100,000 inhabitants and the positivity rate "climbs to nearly 10%", he said, estimating that "this strong deterioration is the forerunner of an epidemic runaway that we have never known until now ".

Only three in ten people vaccinated

The director general of the ARS, Martine Ladoucette, regretted the low vaccination on the island, where barely three out of ten people are fully vaccinated, against more than five out of ten nationally.

It has set a target of "60,000 injections this week" to arrive "at the end of August" with "49% of the population of Reunion" fully vaccinated.

Jean Castex was alarmed Thursday morning in Agen about the "dramatic" health situation in certain overseas territories because too many inhabitants there are, according to him, "resistant to vaccination".

Reunion has only experienced one containment since the start of the pandemic, in spring 2020, and only limited measures to curb the epidemic - temporary closure of bars, night curfew - had been put in place since. .

Since the start of the epidemic on March 11, 2020, 273 patients have died from the disease, including 203 in the last five months.
