To solve the global semiconductor shortage, Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest contract manufacturer of semiconductors, has approved a plan to increase the production of semiconductors for automobiles in China on the 28th.

At an extraordinary board meeting in April, TSMC decided to spend $ 2,887 million (more than JPY 310 billion in Japanese yen) to increase the production capacity of its plant in Nanjing, China.

The plan is to set up a new production line for semiconductors for automobiles, which continues to be in short supply worldwide, and start mass production by next year.

The Taiwanese authorities, which were reviewing the plan, said that the semiconductors produced on the new line are not the most advanced, and TSMC is trying to strengthen measures to protect intellectual property rights, and Taiwan will continue to be the most important base in the future. As it is positioned, the plan was approved on the 28th.

With the increasing importance of semiconductors from the perspective of economic security in addition to the progress of digitization, TSMC, which has world-leading technology, is being attracted from each country, and of these, it is under construction in Arizona, USA. The factory plans to start mass production in 2024.

In Japan, we have agreed to conduct research and development of cutting-edge semiconductors in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture in collaboration with semiconductor-related manufacturers, and we are also considering establishing a manufacturing base in Japan.
