Ugo Humbert, the other French qualifier of the day, came to congratulate him in person on the court just after his victory, the two men leaving arm in arm and smiling.
On Tuesday evening, Chardy, 34 and participating in his first Games, beat Aslan Karatsev, 24th in the world and recent surprise semi-finalist at the Australian Open.
In the next round, he will meet the world No.5, Alexander Zverev to try to reach the last four.
