Juana Rivas Courts, third degree in record time
Equality Irene Montero uses the murder of the girls of Tenerife to charge against the "Patriarchal Justice" that "criminalizes" Juana Rivas
Granada The Prosecutor's Office appeals the third degree granted to Juana Rivas in record time
"A scandal for the feminist movement".
With these words, the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, defined this Tuesday what would mean the entry into prison of Juana Rivas, sentenced to two and a half years in prison for abducting her two minor children in 2017.
Rivas, who kept his children away from their father for 14 months, must enter the Matilde Cantos Social Insertion Center, in Granada, after the Justice partially upheld the appeal prepared by the Prosecutor's Office against the third degree that he has been serving since the June, 15.
Rivas initially entered the penitentiary on June 11, and only four days later achieved the third degree that the Prosecutor's Office appealed at the beginning of July.
"If Juana Rivas goes to prison, it will definitely not only be a scandal for women and for the feminist movement, but also very bad news for democracy," criticized the Minister of Equality.
"We will be sending a message to many women that protecting their children and themselves can be very expensive."
For this reason, Montero has asked the institutions for a "reflection" on whether they really protect "all women."
"We are going to do everything in our power to guarantee that laws and public policies ensure that women's rights are not violated," the minister promised.
Montero already defended Juana Rivas when she entered the social insertion center on June 11, coinciding with the disappearance and murder of the girls of Tenerife.
Then, the Minister of Equality linked both cases to demand a "Feminist Justice" and charge against "Patriarchal Justice" which, she said, "criminalizes" women who try to "defend" their children from sexist violence.
